Renters Insurance Explained

What does renters insurance cover?

Renters insurance covers YOU and provides coverage for:

  • Your Belongings (Furniture, clothes, even your dishes among other things)
  • Your personal Liability - (Not Auto related) If someone sues you for something and they feel you were negligent.
  • Relocation expenses in the event that the place you're renting becomes uninhabitable due to an insurance event.
  • There may be other coverages available too depending on the company we can place you with.

The landlords policy will not cover any of this. Their policy will cover their building.

Are you renting a Condo, Apartment, Townhome, Coach house or a House? If so then you need renters insurance!

Can My roommate and I get a renters policy together?

Yes you can but, both of you will be affected by claim history. For instance, your roommate's car gets broken into and their insured property gets stolen. They need to file a claim. Since you are both on the policy the claim would follow both of you. If you decided to not be roommates anymore and you each get your own place and a new renters policy, the claim will stay on your history and affect your rate for at least 3 years.

We always recommend each roommate having a policy under only their name.

How much does Renters Insurance cost?

At AAIA our goal is to provide you the best coverage at a price you can afford.

All insurance companies use your personal information to create a Renters insurance quote.

The dollar amount of personal property that you want to insure is the primary factor in your price. Then credit history, claim history and zip code are some of the other factors that are used and all companies use them differently.

Since no 2 people are exactly the same the cost for Renters Insurance is usually not the same either.

Will my Renters Insurance policy cover Jewelry?

A Renters Insurance policy usually covers jewelry but at a bare minimum limit. Your  per item policy limit for theft of jewelry items can be as low as $500. if you have an item that's worth $5000 and  its stolen, you would only get the policy limit of $500. The best way to insure jewelry is to schedule it. When you schedule jewelry you are insuring for the replacement cost of the item. Depending on the company, you can schedule it on your Renters policy or on a separate policy specifically for personal property. Either way, there is an additional cost to insure high value jewelry items. An appraisal of the item you want to insure that is less than 3 years old is usually required.
